In order to do deliver quality nursing care, nurses need to look beyond the patient and find out about the person. Any nursing assessment involves gathering information about the needs of an individual and their family. The best way of achieving this is to encourage them to tell their story (or narrative). Listening to the stories of others, such as relatives or carers, can provide a more complete picture of the person’s life and situation and the circumstances that led up to the assessment.
